Hear one of Europe's most exciting young string quartets in a programme of elegance, energy and sweeping emotion. The Fibonacci Quartet is rapidly establishing itself internationally, bringing remarkable precision, expressive intensity and vivid communication to every performance.
Their richly varied programme moves from Mozart’s poise and warmth to the concentrated rhythmic drama of Martinů, before culminating in Tchaikovsky’s deeply personal Third Quartet. It is a wonderful opportunity to hear an exceptional ensemble as its international reputation continues to grow.
New to chamber music? No specialist knowledge is needed. A string quartet is one of the most intimate and absorbing forms of live music, with four individual voices combining in a single musical conversation.
Programme Highlights
Mozart's String Quartet No. 21 in D major, K. 575. opens the concert in a world of poise, clarity and lyrical conversation. Written for the accomplished amateur cellist King of Prussia, it gives unusual prominence to the cello while allowing all four instruments to emerge as equal and distinctive voices. Beneath its elegance lie moments of tenderness and subtle emotional depth.
Martinů's compact String Quartet No. 3 brings a striking change of atmosphere. Sharply defined rhythms, shifting colours and bursts of restless energy reflect the composer's highly individual style. At times playful and incisive, at others lyrical and reflective, it is music that keeps performers and listeners keenly alert.
After the interval comes Tchaikovsky's expansive String Quartet No. 3 in E-flat minor, Op. 30. Written in memory of the violinist Ferdinand Laub, it is one of the composer's most heartfelt chamber works. Its great slow movement has the character of a solemn memorial, while the finale gradually transforms into renewed life and energy.
The Artists
The Fibonacci Quartet comprises violinists Kryštof Kohout and Luna De Mol, violist Elliot Kempton and cellist Findlay Spence. Formed at London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the ensemble is now one of Europe's leading young string quartets, having performed at venues such as Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie, Wigmore Hall, Philharmonie de Paris, Auditorio Sony, Conway Hall, and Museo del Violino, Cremona.Their rise has been exceptionally swift. The Quartet has won First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition. It has also won the Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music Competition and the CAVATINA Chamber Music Competition and received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award.
Their performances are admired for combining technical assurance and dramatic presence with delicacy, restraint and a strong sense of communication.

Alongside the great classical repertoire, the Quartet has created its own arrangements of Moravian folk music, jazz, musical theatre and even heavy metal – evidence of the imagination and adventurous spirit its members bring to their work.
